Kenya :

Female Genital mutilation has been and I bet still is a hot debate as many communities tend to disagree with the notion that the practice is illegal and a human right abuse. Currently, Thirty-seven communities still practice female genital mutilation (FGM) ten years after the Government banned the rite here Kenya. The practice is most prevalent among the Maasai where 93 per cent of women undergo the cut. A Demographic and Health Survey, reveals that more girls are now being ‘cut’ secretly by medical professionals especially in private hospitals. The reality is that fifty per cent of Kenyan women have undergone circumcision. In some areas this percentage is as high as 95 per cent and, as much as 50 percent of the women were operated on when they were aged between 10 and 15 years old.
