Mexico :

Federal authorities announced the arrest of 34 police officers suspected of corruption, along with 17 drug traffickers, in two major anti-drug operations in Sinaloa and Tabasco states. Officials also said they destroyed two landing strips used by the cartels. The operations came as a Mexican newspaper said that July had been the bloodiest month in the country since President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006. According to Milenio, 854 people were killed in violence associated with organized crime in the country in July alone. Worst-affected in the ongoing violence is the border town of Ciudad Juarez, where 250 people were killed in July.

The violence is scaling and what is making the situation worse from bad is that the police officials are themselves involved in the scenario. I don’t think there could ever be any respite from the ongoing war.

The truth is, Andres, you are right...This war has NO end...

We cannot realistically just up and abolish drugs and drug trafficking. Initially the idea of President Calderon was to get the corrupt officials out of the police, judicial, and political powers, and break down cartels to where new ”non-corrupt” forces could manahe them locally and state-wide, instead of federally and with the military..

Unfortunatly the problem was MUCH greater than even the ”worst case scenario” had anticipated and now that we have accepted ”support” via the Merida Initiative, it seems there will be no end to keeping the blood and violence, here in our yard.

This concerns us all in the region. Mexico which has become a frontline in this war against drug cartels cannot afford to have such a corrupt and decadent police force...
